They talk a little about the way guitars are made, the materials used in guitar construction, and the options with the hardware. Guitar maintenance, including when and how to change the strings. How to read music notation and tablature. What all the different kinds of notes mean. That's basically what you get with book number 1, guitar 101.

Book II - Sounds and techniques

A large part of this book is devoted to playing chords on the guitar. They begin with major and minor chords. They introduce the concept of chord families, where an A chord is family with the D and E chords. The chords of a I IV V progression. They show you some rhythm patters for strumming the chords. And they introduce the chords from a lot of other families like C, D, and G. They talk about how you are able to play a large quantity of songs by using just 3 chords on the guitar. They coach you on how to accomplish this. They add in the playing of minor chords in some of your progressions, and some songs you can play with them. A cool section of the book is where they show you how easy it is to play familiar oldies songs that you already know. They explain how you can play them in any key you're comfortable with using the chord families and they give you tips on how many strums per chord you will want to use with your right hand. This is a great way to start having a lot of fun with the guitar very early on, and it's very encouraging, and very nice. Next up, you work with 7th chords and learn some new songs that use them. More teaching on chords included the difference between open chords, barre chords, power chords, etc. Right hand rhythm techniques, syncopation are talked about. Also, they cover something about the difference between playing straight eighth notes and using a shuffle feel in your playing, and they give examples of songs that use each to help you learn it.
